Day 5: Social distancing and sugar detox… (31 days without sugar)

I think that being relatively isolated during a pandemic is a boon for trying to do a month long sugar detox.

There are WAY fewer temptations. Since I’m not really around other people I don’t have to resist the urge to have what they’re having, or taste the cookies that they made, or order dessert at dinner. Nope! I’m at home in my little bubble, I cleaned out most of the sugary stuff from my fridge and pantry (well, there’s still a whole bag of chocolate chips calling me, but I’m going to resist!!) AND, it’s easy to check the ingredients when I’m buying groceries online. (Thanks, Publix app, for listing all the ingredients and nutrition facts for almost every product in your stores.)

Since I’m not meeting friends at Kahwa or Starbucks, I have control over what goes in my coffee or tea, and I’m not lured in by the most delicious new baked treats that they have on display. I’m not eating out, so there’s no hidden sugar in my salads, soups, curries or other dishes. (Did you know that Thai food has LOTS of sugar in it? Maybe that’s why I love it so much.)

My go-to snack has been lightly salted dry roasted peanuts.

Now, I know peanuts aren’t necessarily the healthiest nut, but I enjoy them, and they have a bit of natural sweetness to them. And if they are keeping me from tearing into that bag of chocolate morsels, then I say go for it.

Of course, I do wish this pandemic was finished, and life was back to normal and I was out celebrating life with friends. But in the meantime, I guess I’m making lemons into lemonade (although who wants lemonade without any sugar?) I hope you’re hanging in there and also looking for the bright side!

Love, Cheryl
